Jim Pittman

Jim Pittman’s minimalist paintings evoke ancient cliff dwellings and canyons. They are equally evocative of a mythic unconscious that communicates pure emotion through color and texture. Visits to Chaco Canyon and Mesa Verde piqued Pittman’s imagination of ancient cultures. Small boxy shapes reminiscent of cliff dwelling windows began occasionally to appear in his paintings. More than anything else, however, Pittman is a painter of emotions. Although he loves to paint plein air, his paintings, he says, “are not site-specific . . . they are what the site evokes.”
