David Drummond

A painting by Albuquerque, New Mexico watercolorist David Drummond has been chosen to appear on the 2007 White House winter holiday card.

Nestled in the Jacqueline Kennedy Garden beneath the branches of an Osage orange tree is Sylvia Shaw Judson’s bronze statue Gardener – the scene depicted on the 2007 White House Christmas card, painted by David Drummond. Mr. Drummond is a watercolorist whose landscapes represent the beauty seen at our national parks.

Drummond is one of the Southwest’s most recognized watercolorists and is widely recognized for his photorealist watercolors of Lake Powell. He is equally adept at capturing emotional tenor and intricate detail in his figurative work and still lifes. His paintings achieve extreme realism and move beyond it into distillations of the ideal.

His skill with light and shadow on water is equaled by his attention to detail and mood in his still life and figurative work. He is adept at capturing emotional tenor, and at creating a sense of place. His still lifes come alive with the absorption and refraction of light through flower petals. The play of light on fabric and form in his figurative work conveys a sense of place, tone, and time of day as ethereal and substantive as early morning light on water.
